Understanding gold

What is gold jewellery actually worth?

The value of gold jewellery is determined almost entirely by two things: weight and purity. Unlike antiques or designer pieces, the brand name on a gold ring rarely adds meaningful value — the market cares about how many grams of pure gold the piece contains.

This is good news for sellers. A plain 18ct gold ring is worth exactly the same as an ornate 18ct gold ring of the same weight. Condition matters very little — broken clasps, bent settings and scratched surfaces don't change the underlying gold content.

Carats explained

Reading a gold hallmark

In the UK, gold purity is expressed in carats — a measure of the proportion of pure gold in the alloy. 24 carat is pure gold; lower carats contain a mix of gold and other metals such as copper, silver or palladium.

18ct750 · 75.0%The standard for quality jewellery. Richer colour, higher gold content, and noticeably heavier feel.
22ct916 · 91.6%Traditional for sovereign coins and high-quality Asian jewellery. Soft, warm yellow colour.
24ct999 · 99.9%Pure gold. Too soft for most jewellery use but found in bullion bars and some Asian pieces.
