The short answer

Condition matters for rare coins and makes little difference to common ones

Most silver coins sold to a trade buyer are common dates from common series: UK pre-decimal coins, standard Britannias, Morgan dollars in average grades and similar. For these, condition has almost no effect on the price. They are worth their silver content, and to a metals buyer a circulated and an uncirculated example of a common date are worth essentially the same.

A minority of coins, such as specific rare dates, proof issues, first-year strikes and key mintmarks, carry a meaningful collector premium above melt value. For these, condition matters a great deal. A scarce date in average circulated condition may carry a modest premium; the same coin in exceptional uncirculated condition can be worth many times more. Date and mintmark are the first test, and condition is the second.

The practical advice is simple: do not clean any coin before sending it. Cleaning alters the coin's surface and original lustre, and destroys its collector value. A cleaned coin is typically reduced to melt value, however rare the date. Please send everything exactly as it is.

What affects a silver coin's value above melt

DateIn most series, certain years were minted in much smaller numbers than others. These low-mintage key dates can carry a collector premium whatever their condition. The 1893-S Morgan dollar is a well-known example.
MintmarkUS coins from the Philadelphia, Denver, New Orleans and San Francisco mints are distinguished by their mintmark (P, D, O, S). Some mintmark and date combinations are far rarer than others.
Condition (grade)Coins are graded on the 70-point Sheldon scale, from Poor (P-1) to Perfect Mint State (MS-70). For most common dates, the grade makes little difference to the price. For key dates, the difference between VF and MS can be 10x or more.
Strike qualityProof coins, made with specially prepared dies and planchets for presentation sets, typically command premiums over business-strike examples of the same date. Look for mirror-like fields and frosted relief.
Original surfacesCoins with original, undisturbed surfaces ('original skin') are worth considerably more to collectors than cleaned examples. Never use silver polish, vinegar, baking soda or any other cleaning method on a coin before selling.
SeriesUK florins, crowns and shillings are generally common, although Victorian silver crowns and certain Victorian shillings attract more collector interest. US Morgan dollars have one of the deepest collector markets in the world.
Errors and varietiesMinting errors such as double dies, off-centre strikes and die breaks can be worth multiples of face or melt value. They need expert identification, so please note any unusual coins on your contents list.
Sets and presentationOriginal mint sets, presentation cases and coins with their original certificates of authenticity (COA) typically command premiums. Keep all original packaging.

Questions we hear most

How do I know if my coin is a key date?

Key dates are usually years with low mintages, and coins in exceptional condition can also carry a collector premium. For UK pre-decimal coins, the 1905 halfcrown and several Victorian shillings are examples. For US Morgan dollars, the 1893-S is the best-known key date, and certain other date and mintmark combinations are scarce. If it helps, we can look at your contents list before you send.

Will you grade my coins professionally?

We assess condition so that we can apply any appropriate collector premium above melt value. We do not submit coins for third-party grading (PCGS/NGC) as part of our process. If you have a coin you believe warrants professional grading, we recommend having it graded before you send it to us.

I have Morgan dollars. Are they worth more than their silver content?

Most Morgan dollars (1878–1904, 1921) are common and trade at a modest premium above melt value. A handful of key date and mintmark combinations are worth far more. We assess each coin individually.

My pre-decimal UK coins look uncirculated. Does that matter?

For most pre-decimal dates, uncirculated examples add a modest premium. For genuinely rare dates in uncirculated grades, the premium can be substantial. We assess each coin individually and report its grade and any premium applied.

What if I disagree with the grade or premium you've assigned?

Our offer is fully itemised, and you can decline any individual coin. We are happy to explain the basis for any assessment, and if you believe we have missed a key date or variety, we will re-examine the piece.
