A full canteen of sterling silver cutlery can weigh 1–3kg — worth several hundred pounds at today's silver prices. Old silverware sitting in a sideboard drawer is one of the most undervalued assets people own. We test every piece accurately with XRF, separate sterling from plated, and pay 90% of live spot for genuine sterling silver.

Common Questions

How do I tell sterling silverware from silver-plated?

Look for hallmarks on the back of pieces. UK sterling is stamped '925', 'Sterling', or carries a lion passant. EPNS (Electro-Plated Nickel Silver) or 'Sheffield Plate' markings indicate plated items. If there are no markings, we test everything with XRF.

Is old hallmarked silverware worth more than modern sterling?

For our purposes, the silver content drives the offer. However, genuinely antique silverware (Georgian, early Victorian) in good condition may have collector value above melt value. We'll identify any such pieces and advise accordingly.

Do complete sets sell for more?

Not for scrap purposes — we pay by weight and purity regardless. If you believe your set has significant antique collector value, it may be worth seeking a specialist antique valuation before deciding to sell for scrap.

What about heavily tarnished pieces?

Tarnish has no effect on our offer — it's a surface patina that doesn't change the silver content underneath. Send items exactly as they are.
