The short answer

You can decline at any time — everything is returned free within 5 working days

No offer from British Gold Exchange is binding until you accept it in writing. If you disagree with any part of the offer — the weight, the purity reading, the rate applied or the valuation of a specific piece — you can decline and your items will be returned fully insured within 5 working days. There is no fee, no penalty and no obligation.

Because our offers are fully itemised, you can query individual pieces rather than the entire lot. If you want to accept the offer on your gold jewellery but decline the offer on one ring that you believe was under-valued, that is entirely possible. We can also reassess a specific piece if you have reason to believe our reading was incorrect.

We hold your items securely for 7 days from the date of the offer while you consider. After 7 days without a response, we follow up once. If we do not hear from you, we return everything. You are never in a situation where your items are held indefinitely.

What affects it

What you can do if you're not satisfied

Decline in fullSimply email or call to decline. We return all items, fully insured via Royal Mail Special Delivery, within 5 working days. No fee, no explanation needed.
Partial acceptanceAccept the offer on some pieces and have others returned. Our itemised offers make this straightforward — each piece has its own line entry.
Request a recheckIf you believe a specific item was incorrectly identified or tested, ask us to recheck it. We re-run the XRF and re-weigh the piece and send you the updated reading.
Query the rateIf our rate has changed since you received the offer — due to a movement in the gold price — we can reassess at the current rate. Rates are applied on the day the offer is prepared.
Get a second opinionYou can ask for your items to be returned and obtain a competing offer. Some sellers do this as a check. The return is free and insured regardless of your reason.
Accept partial lotIf you decide to keep some pieces for sentimental reasons after seeing the offer, that is completely fine. You choose exactly what you sell.

Common questions

Questions we hear most

How long do I have to decide?

7 days from the date of your offer. We'll send a courtesy follow-up if we haven't heard from you. After that, we return your items automatically. There is no pressure to decide quickly.

What if I think the weight is wrong?

Our scales are calibrated to 0.01g and are tested regularly. If you believe a piece has been weighed incorrectly, we will re-weigh it and send you the result. In practice this discrepancy is extremely rare.

What if I think the purity reading is wrong?

XRF analysis is accurate to within 0.1% purity. If you have a specific reason to believe the reading is incorrect — for example, a hallmark that contradicts it — tell us and we will retest the piece and explain the discrepancy.

Can I negotiate the offer?

Our rates are applied consistently and published in advance. We do not negotiate individual prices because our offers are already at the upper end of the market. For very large lots (over 500g), contact us directly to discuss.

Is there a risk of my items being damaged during the return?

Return items are packed by our team and sent via Royal Mail Special Delivery with full insurance cover. In the rare event of transit damage, our insurance covers you.

What if I change my mind after accepting?

Once you have accepted in writing and payment has been made, the transaction is complete. We cannot reverse payments. Please take the full 7 days to decide if you need to.
